Manual Windows tuning and Optimization.
In this article some undocumented and hidden functions of Windows will be covered, as well as some tips, shortcuts and secrets of Windows.
1. For starters let’s make the “Send To” selection more to our liking. Find the Windows folder on your PC, open it and find the Send to folder. Here you will see a bunch of shortcuts that resemble the Send to locations. Now we can create our own shortcuts here and they will appear in the “Send to: dialog.
2. It is a pain when you have to edit bat, sys, dll text files and windows doesn’t open the right program. Now that you know how to change Send to, simply add a shortcut to the Notepad there and editing an text file is now easily possible through the right click menu.
3. Now, if you take a look at your keyboard, you will see the button with little windows (lets call it Win button). Most of you know that pressing it will bring up the start menu, but not everyone knows all the key combinations you can use with it:
Win+M, Win+D – minimize all open windows
Win+Shift+M – reverts the minimize operation(expands)
Win+E – opens the Explorer
Win+Pause/Break – Opens System properties windows
Win+F – search window
Win+R – Run window
Win+Tab – uses an alternative way to switch active windows or programs
Win+F1 – brings up the Windows Help window.
4. There are a lot of useful commands that the Shift button is used for. If you hold down Shift while deleting something, it will be deleted and not put into the Recycle Bin. For quick Windows restart, without having to restart the whole PC, you can hold down the Shift key when you select “restart the Computer – Yes”. If you hold down Shift while Windows is loading, it will not load the program that auto start, and if you hold Shift and insert a CD that has an auto play option, it will not do so.
5. In your start menu you can see the convenient way you programs are displayed, like you go to All program – then another submenu where you can choose one thing and another submenu comes up with this exact program. Some people wonder if it is possible to do the same with system folders in Start, like network Connections and Control panel, so it doesn’t open a window right away, but instead gives another submenu where you can select stuff. This can easily be done if you right click on the Start menu, go to Properties, the Start Menu tab and click on advanced properties. Here you will have all the choices of various visual models for everything in the start menu
6. You can manually create shortcuts for all your favorite programs. Just right click and select “Create Shortcut” or click Send to and select “Desktop (Create Shortcut)”.
7. If while dragging a file with your mouse you will hold down the right mouse button instead of left, after releasing it you will get a menu asking what to do with the file – Copy, Move, Create shortcut or cancel.
8. You can manually turn on the Screensaver if you know you are going to be away for a while. Just create a shortcut to your favorite one and run it whenever you want. The screensaver files are the .SCR file in the WINDOWS\System folder.
9. You don’t have to spam F8 key if you need to bring up the load selection page during Windows start up, you can simply hold down the Ctrl key.
10. If you want to save the image currently on your screen you can simply press the PrintScreen button. Now you can open any graphic editor, such as Paint, paste the image here and save it. If you want to copy only the image of the current window, hold down Alt and then press PrintScreen key, do the same to save it afterwards.
11. To create your own Icon, open Paint, create a new image, go to Attributes and set the size to 31x31 pixels. Paint whatever you want and save it as a .BMP file. Now locate the file and rename it into .ICO – you have yuself an Icon file. You can also rename it to .CUR and you will get a mouse cursor file.
