Basic Optimization Tips on how to improve your Windows

Hard and complicated system tuning does not always mean the best outcome. You can spend hours on editing .ini files and manually changing the registry entries and get 100% improvement, but it is possible to get just a little less with times less time spend. Also keep in mind that a simple mistake in registry editing can even make things worse.

First let’s think hat the slowest part in any PC is, times slower then the memory and CPU. It is of course the hard drive. So this is where we start if we are on the way to a faster computer.

The following procedures have been tested and proved accurate for all Windows versions from 95 to NT, 200, and XP, with some specific ones for XP at the end.

Disk Errors

One basis thing to do that can be easily overlooked is checking that your disks are error free. Program errors and crashes, power drops and such, irregular hard drive activities – these can all cause some errors on your hard drives.

Make sure you run the disk scan every once in a while. Use all the options available in ti, you may also need to restart the PC for it to do things properly.

Just right click any of the drives in the MY Computer windows, and go to Tools, where select

You can find this program by double clicking My Computer, right click your hard drive, and select Tools from the dialog box.

The Paging File

The paging file, or swap file, also referred to as the virtual memory, is space allocated on your hard drive that Windows uses when it is about to run out of RAM. Windows configures the size of this file by default automatically, which can eventually sauce slowness and fragmentation of the space used. It is much more effective to set it manually.

Right click on My Computer, go to Properties – Advanced - Performance Settings – Advanced Virtual Memory, Change. This may very a little depending on what exact version of Windows you have.

A new window should appear where you can manually set the page file size. The best amount should be about 1.5 to 2 times your RAM. Set the minimum and maximum size as the same number. Click OK and restart your computer. IF any time in future you will get a message that your PC is low on virtual memory, increase the size of the page file.

Temporary File Cleanup

Windows itself and the programs installed on it create loads of temporary files during their work, but not all this programs clean up properly after themselves. These temporarily files folders can easily reach huge sizes. And need to be cleaner to free up all this space.

Also don’t forget to clean your Recycle bin if you are sure you don’t need anything in it.

Defragmenting Your Drive

The next thing you can do is make sure your hard drive is properly defragmented. File fragmentation occurs continuously while using your computer. What it means is that the files are not in one piece, they are split up and spread around your hard drive, thus when you go to read them, it takes longer to find all those pieces, than if the file was all in one place.

When you continuously use your computer big files become fragmented and harder to read. So the next thing you should do is to make sure your local drives are properly defragmented, luckily Windows has all the tools for that. The built in Defrag program runs well and does what it should, so run it about once a month to take care of this problem.

Hard Drive Temperature

Since we took care of all the basic things about your hard drive, now we have to check if it is running in normal, healthy conditions and check how hot does it get. Lots of free tools exist to check this data, so fell free to choose anything to your liking, test the temperature values and see what the results are.

Normal hard drives usually run at temperatures no higher then 55 degrees Celsius, so if yours is higher then this, you might consider doing something about your cooling system.

Essential Updates

It is always a good idea to keep your Windows up –to-date, since the developers usually find out first about problems with their software and such company as Microsoft will almost immediately create a hotfix for it. So run updates regularly on Windows and other applications you use a lot. You never know, it might save you much more trouble that you can think of.
