10 MS Windows XP services that should be turned off for system optimization
One of the most important steps to ensure the security of the operating system (OS) is disabling unneeded services. Disabling unnecessary services also will increase the productivity of your PC, as this is one of the most appreciable methods of the Windows optimization.
As far as Windows OS were developed for the network so users of Microsoft product are concern regarding the computer security and should to disable those services that they don’t use.
In all versions of MS Windows used the different services, so any list of services that are recommended to switch off for safety your version of the OS, is relatively specific. Using such a suitable list, one should always do a discount on the specific features of the system. Nevertheless, it can serve as a good starting point for experienced users of MS Windows, regardless of version.
If your computer has Microsoft Windows XP operating system, service, listed below, should be disabled.
• Internet Information Services - provides an opportunity to use your computer as a Web server.
• Service NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing. NetMeeting – is primarily a Microsoft Windows client for voice IP-telephony and videoconferencing but this particular service also provides remote access to your desktop.
• Service Remote Desktop Help Session Manager – is used in Remote Assistance, which allows remote users to gain access to the system to assist in solving problems.
• Remote Registry. In terms of security the features provides remote management registry and are simply frightening. It allows remote users (in theory and only under certain circumstances) to edit the registry Windows.
• Routing and Remote Access - combine a number of functions that should be made available separately. Certainly, most of system administrators would agree with me. In any case, for typical desktop systems like Microsoft Windows XP, these functions usually are not needed and even better that all of them can be turned off in a single service. Routing and Remote Access provides an opportunity to use the system as a router device and NAT as a gateway for Internet access through a modem connection and the server VPN.
• Simple File Sharing. If your computer does not fall within the domain Microsoft Windows, the file system is set up to ensure universal access to files. In reality, however, access to the files should be provided only for certain authorized users. Service of Simple File Sharing, which provides full access to shared files without any exceptions for this purpose is quite useless. It is run by default in the Windows XP Professional and the Windows XP Home version as well, and the last version unfortunately can not be disabled. In order to stop this service in Windows XP Professional, go to My Computer/Tools/Folder/ Options, select the View tab and uncheck the option "Use simple file sharing" (Recommended) box in Advanced settings.
• Service Detection SSDP − is used to detect UPnP devices in network and must be enabled for proper operation of the Universal Plug and Play Device Host services (see below).
• Service Telnet. At the dawn of the era of computer security this old service were used to provide remote access to the command processor for the UNIX servers. Today using of Telnet for providing remote management of UNIX systems can serve as sufficient ground for dismissal. Instead of it should be used the encrypted protocol SSH, for example.
• Universal Plug and Play Device Host Services. If all Plug and Play devices have already been installed, the service will likely no longer be required.
• Messenger – обеспечивает возможность отправлять «сетевые сообщения» и ответственна за функционирование Alerter. С клиентом быстрого обмена сообщениями Windows Messenger она никак не связана и для работы в сети Windows Messenger IM вовсе не нужна.
Messenger − provides the ability to send «network communication» and responsible for the Alerter operation. It does not relate to the client of rapid messaging Windows Messenger and is not needed for work in the Windows Messenger IM network.
These services are launched and are not present on all computers. All depends on who installed the operating system, what kind of the OS version uses (XP Home or XP Professional) and in what supplier the computer was bought (if Windows XP was preinstalled).
All described services except of Simple File Sharing can be disconnected from one application. Just click Start, select Settings/Control Panel, open the folder Administrative Tools, and in it − a window «Services». To disable any of these services double-click on the appropriate item in the «Services» and change settings in the Startup type menu. Usually, it is recommended to select the item Disabled in order to disable the services for security reason. If you suspect that the selected service is required for the operation of other services you can check it by opening the Dependencies tab in the Properties dialog service.
Of course this is not an exhaustive list of services and applications that can be switched off without compromising the functionality of the system. After a successful installation and configuration of operating system most of users do not exactly need none of these services. Many other services also can be switched off without any consequences for the system, but before they stop, is it recommended to examine the general list of services to make sure that they really are not needed. Remote Procedure Call, RPC are necessary for stable operation of the system.
Any lunched but unused service is the source of the increased vulnerability of the system. It is better to disable the service if it does not have special meaning for authorized users of the computer and for the normal functioning of the system.
